A reliable network starts with clean and maintained connectors !

The best cleaning method currently practiced in optical fiber market is the combination of two conventional methods: the "wet" and the "dry" cleaning.

This cleaning method consist in cleaning the end-face of an optical connector using a suitable solvent, then drying any remaining residue with a cleaning wipe dedicated to optical fibers.

How to clean the end-face of an optical connector ?

The connectors should be cleaned with a CLEANOPTIC dry wipes and the CLEANOPTIC isopropyl alcohol or CLEANOPTIC Degreaser.

Fold the paper clean and avoid putting your fingers on the part of the dry wipes used to clean the connector -the sebum of the skin is too oily- : there is a possibility to leave grease again on the optical connector.

Fold in two the CLEANOPTIC dry wipes.

Soak a small quantity of CLEANOPTIC Solvent on one side of CLEANOPTIC dry wipe. Place the end-face of the optical connector on the wet part of the cleaning wipe. In the case of UPC polishing, the optical connector must be maintained at 90 ° to the dry paper dry .For APC polishing, it must try to clean them in the corner. Always go from the wet to the dry.

Make small pressures, straight passages with the optical connector on the cleaning wipe from the wet to the dry part without raising the optical connector. Avoid making a circular motion as contaminants removed on fiber optics are again deposited on the optical face of the connector. Two to three passes are sufficient.

Use a camera inspection (microscope or video inspection probe) to check the connector end face and ensure it doesn’t remain solvent residues or contaminants and that the connector is not damaged.

BE CAREFUL

  • The risks of contamination affecting the optical fibers are everywhere: in the air, on the skin and within the protective dust cap of the connectors.
  • Moreover, the end-faces of optical fiber can be dirty because of the plastic bag in which there are packed.
  • It’s necessary to inspect the end-faces of the patchcord but also the adaptor in which it will be plugged.

The Cleaning method without solvents

This type of cleaning method is particularly effective where the contaminants are small particles of dust, lint, residue solvent.

However, to dissolve or remove other types of contaminants such as grease, oil from the hands or index matching gel, ... it is necessary to use solvents (degreaser).

The Cleaning method with solvents

The method of cleaning with solvents removes dirt and grease residue from the end-face of an optical connector, avoiding the possibility of scratching or damaging it.

Contamination by grease residue is responsible for more than 50% of the troubles of the connections with optical fiber.

The combination of both cleaning methods can remove contaminants from the end-face and also to avoid the accumulation of electrostatic charges on it.
